2018 Skilled Occupation Lists

The Department of Immigration has published newly updated versions of the skilled visa occupation lists, which came into effect on 17 January 2018.

A variety of new roles have been added to the skilled occupation lists, while several formerly listed occupations have been removed. Certain professions have also been shifted between the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL), and the Short-term Skilled Occupations List (STSOL).

Additionally, new changes to occupational caveats which exclude the use of the occupation in certain circumstances have also been made.

Added Occupations

The following three occupations—which were previously not included in any skilled occupation list—have now been added to the STSOL:

  • Psychotherapist
  • Property Manager
  • Real Estate Representative

However, their inclusion to the STSOL also came with several caveats which may disqualify applicants from eligibility. Exclusions will apply to Property Managers and Real Estate Representatives if the position:

  • has a nominated base salary of less than $65,000;
  • is for a business with fewer than five employees;
  • is for business with an annual turnover of less than $1 million;
  • is not located in regional Australia.

Removed Occupations

The following two occupations will be completely removed from the eligible skilled occupation list for all skilled visa programs commencing 17 January 2018:

  • Building Associate
  • Hair or Beauty Salon Manager

The Department has said that the change was made in response to fluctuating demand in the local employment market.

Occupations Moved from the STSOL to the MLTSSL

The occupations listed below will be moved from the STSOL to the MLTSSL. Certain eligibility caveats pertaining to the occupations will also apply:

  • Horse Breeder
    • Exclusions will apply if:
      • the position primarily involves low skilled tasks (e.g. feeding of livestock or animals, fruit picking or packing);
      • the place of employment is not located in regional Australia.
  • Management Consultant
    • Exclusions will apply for businesses that have:
      • an annual turnover of less than AUD$1M;
      • fewer than five employees;
      • a nominated base salary of less than AUD$90,000.

The Department has stated that there are currently no plans to move any occupations from the MLTSSL to the STSOL.

Occupations with Caveat-Only Changes

Certain occupations have also had new eligibility caveats added, or received amendments to previously existing restrictions. These roles will remain on their current skilled occupation list, and be subject to the following changes listed below:

  • Accommodation and Hospitality Managers
